Update on Kindergarten homeschooling with Cat Tien...

Two weeks ago Cat Tien cracked the code and figured out how to put individual sounds together to form a word. We borrowed a little from Montessori ideas of tactility, as well as engaging spacial intelligence. We used little wooden letters. She was shown two letters coming into physical contact to form a word. So, an "i" would come closer and closer to the "t" until they touched, at which point she could easily sound out "it".

The second crucial insight was to let her do this without having to look at my face. When she was looking at my face for verification or to try to mimic the shape of my mouth, she stopped being able to hear the sounds. By turning away, I stopped being a distraction and she got the exercise immediately.

Last, we tapped into her love of performance and had her create "instructional" videos. She liked that she could inspire other kids with her enthusiasm for learning. She improvised these videos and made up the songs herself:
